CNC programmers must be able to read engineering drawings, blueprints, and 3D models to understand the specifications of the part to be produced. They translate these into machine code. Understand tolerances, material specifications, and other key details from the drawings. For more complex jobs, programmers may use specialized software (such as CAD/CAM software) to generate programs automatically or help optimize tool paths. Determine the correct cutting tools, fixtures, and materials for each job. Program the tool changes and sequences of operations to ensure efficiency and accuracy. Load and set up the CNC machine, including installing and calibrating tools, setting up the workpiece, and ensuring the machine is running smoothly. Adjust machine settings, such as speed, feed rates, and tool offsets, based on material type and specifications. Work closely with machinists, engineers, and other team members to ensure that designs can be feasibly manufactured. Discuss any design or production issues with the engineering team to find solutions before full-scale production begins.
