Job Description

Role & responsibilities Ensure that the provisions of the Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules, 2004 or modified thereafter, are implemented Establish and maintain an effective radiation protection programme to ensure safety of workers, patients and public. Instruct all workers on relevant safety measures Developing suitable emergency plans to deal with accidents and ensuring appropriate emergency preparedness Provide adequate training in radiation protection and safety methodologies to all workers. Implement all radiation surveillance measures. Conduct periodic radiation protection surveys to verify compliance with the regulatory requirements. Ensure safe work practices during procedures, such as source transfer and target replacement Carry out personnel monitoring and maintain records thereof. Ensure periodic calibration of radiation measuring and associated instruments Submit periodic reports to the competent authority giving details such as safety status of the installation and inventory of sources; and Responsible for the systematic measurement, documentation, and assurance of the physics aspects of all radiation delivery equipment used in Hospital Performs acceptance testing and commissioning of all treatment-related equipment which includes calibration of all radiation producing sources and maintenance of all information for their appropriate use, radiation safety and compliance with state and national regulations Routine performance of acceptance testing, calibration, and safety surveys of imaging and radiation therapy equipment Develops, implements and supervises quality control programs in the radiology and/or radiation oncology department Maintains a comprehensive quality assurance program that ensures patients are provided tumor localization, radiation treatment, and dose distributions as prescribed which includes assurance of the accuracy of treatment unit parameters Responsible for the development of treatment plans, acquisition and storage of data for treatment plans, and the calculation of dose distributions and machine settings for treatment delivery Develops and documents performance specifications, testing, tolerances, and frequency of testing for all therapy equipment Develops a quality control program and carries out tests to re assure efficient and reliable performance of equipment Responsible for the development of treatment plans as assigned including routine, 3D, IMRT, IGRT, HDR, and SRS/SBRT treatment planning Translates the desired treatment plan into a set of instructions for the radiation therapist(s) to execute Responsible for the in-vivo dose measurement and use of measuring devices for verification of dose delivery to patients Provides interpretation/consultation to the Radiation Oncologist on basis of in-vivo dosimetry Directs the design, fabrication and measurement of treatment beam modifiers and treatment aids Responsible to obtain and disseminate information pertaining to current practices within the field of radiation oncology physics Collaborates with the Radiation Oncologist and Radiation Therapists in the treatment planning verification and execution of plans Provides consultation to the Radiologist(s) and Radiation Oncologist(s) on the physical and radiobiological aspect of treatment Performs calculations of dose distribution in and around tumor and surrounding normal tissue Ensures correct radiation dosimetry in Teletherapy and Brachytherapy Designs of auxilliary devices needed for accurate treatment of patients Performs after repair tests of radiotherapy equipment in collaboration with the maintenance engineer Prepares presentations to medical and radiation oncologists, radiation therapists and nurses on radiation physics, protection and dosimetry Conducts training and presentation sessions on radiation safety issues for medical students, radiology or radiation oncology residents, graduate students, physicians, nurses, technologists, ancillary personnel and other staff Consults with other physicians and patients regarding radiation exposure and safety Participates in department financial and personnel planning Provide research and development of new devices and modalities for improved diagnostic and therapeutic uses of radiation and ultrasound Participates in physics, clinical and basic research. Duty allocations to RT Therapist and Medical Physicist. Coordination for Operations and Vendors on Machinery, AMC/CMC/PMC and HDR Source procurement/ Financial quotes etc., Coordination with Group Chief RSO on regular smooth process flow. Performs related duties as assigned Responsible for all such other tasks entrusted by the management from time to time. Documentation as to issuance of dosimetry if an individual(s) is determined to be likely to receive, in one year, a radiation dose in excess of 10% of the allowable limits. The RSO is to verify that the total effective dose equivalent does not exceed the annual limit for members of the public. This determination is to be documented by measurement or calculation.
